Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Spring has officially sprung! In addition to your usual spring cleaning, follow these spring home maintenance tips to get your house ready for the season.

Tip #1: Repair the roof

TAMKO Building Products says homeowners should inspect their roofs at least twice a year, plus after major storm events. Spring is the perfect time to inspect your roof, as you can assess any winter damage that's gone unnoticed and ensure your roof's ready for the warmer weather.

You don’t have to get up on the roof to check for wear and damage. Use binoculars to get a closer look at the shingles, flashing and overall structure. Check for missing or loose shingles; blistered, curled, buckled or cracked shingles; rust spots on the flashing, warping and sagging; piles of leaves, moss or lichen; and shingle granule loss. Also inspect the attic for signs of leaks and water damage. If you come across any issues, contact a professional roofing technician for repairs right away. Neglecting to address even minor repairs can lead to major damage down the road.

Tip #2: Clean Out the Gutters and Downspouts

Remove any leaves, tree branches, dirt and other debris from the gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters inhibit the drainage of rain water, which can cause water to leak into your home, resulting in costly damage. Along with cleaning out the gutters, make sure they are bonded to your home. If loose, tighten the gutters and ensure the system is free flowing.

Tip #3: Check Your Lawn Equipment

Check your lawn equipment, including weed wackers and lawn mowers, to get them ready for spring and summer use. Clean the equipment, add gas or new batteries if needed, and sharpen the cutting blades.

Tip #4: Power Wash Your House, Driveway and Deck

Use a power washer to clean your house's exterior and any dirty outdoor services, such as the driveway, deck, porch and fence. You can rent or buy a power washer at your local home improvement store or ask to borrow one from a neighbor. As you're cleaning these surfaces, check for signs of wear and damage and make repairs as needed.

Tip #5: Prep the AC

Now is the time to clean your AC unit. Remove leaves, sticks, branches and other obstructions from in and around your air conditioner, and use a cloth to wipe away any dirt and grime that may have accumulated on the unit. Also replace the filters.

Tip #6: Seal Drafty Windows and Doors

Use weatherstripping or caulking to seal any drafty windows and doors. If you've sealed these drafts in preparation for winter, check the weatherstripping and caulking to ensure they're still in good shape. Replace them as needed.

Once you've complete these home maintenance tips, you'll be ready to relax and enjoy spring!
